Spring is a major turning point in the Gold Coast pest calendar. It’s the beginning of termite swarming season and the lead-up to summer - the time of year when activity from cockroaches, ants, mosquitoes and other common pests can increase significantly.

Getting a few things sorted during spring can put your home in a much better position for the warmer months ahead.

Make Your Termite Inspection a Priority

As the weather becomes warmer and more humid, winged reproductive termites -commonly called alates or swarmers, leave established colonies to find a mate and attempt to start new colonies.

These winged termites are sometimes mistaken for flying ants and may be noticed around outdoor lights, windows or elsewhere around the property, particularly around dusk following warm, humid weather.

Seeing flying termites doesn’t automatically mean termites are attacking your home, but it can indicate that an established colony is somewhere nearby.

If it has been close to 12 months since your last termite inspection, now is a good time to book one. A professional inspection can check for signs of termite activity, identify conditions that may increase the risk of attack and assess visible areas of any existing termite management system.

Tackle a Few Practical Jobs Outside

Professional pest management works best when it’s supported by good property maintenance. A few simple spring jobs can make a real difference:

Clear blocked gutters and remove areas of standing water.
Keep garden beds, vegetation and heavy mulch away from the building where practical.
Avoid storing timber, firewood or cardboard directly against the house or in contact with the soil.
Trim branches and vegetation that touch the roof, gutters or exterior walls.
Check that downpipes and air-conditioning overflows discharge away from the building.
Remove unnecessary clutter and stored items from around sheds, fences and external walls.

These steps can reduce damp pest harborage, remove potential termite food sources and make the building perimeter easier to inspect.

Check What Has Changed Around Your Home

It’s also worth taking a deliberate walk around the outside of your home and looking for anything that may have changed since last spring.

Look for new cracks, gaps around plumbing or utility penetrations, leaking taps or pipes, and areas where soil, mulch or landscaping materials have built up against weep holes, cladding or the slab edge.

These seemingly small changes can create new pest entry points, conceal termite activity or interfere with the visible inspection zones around your home.
