Why Termites Thrive on the Gold Coast

Subterranean termites need warmth, moisture and a source of cellulose, such as timber. The Gold Coast’s humid climate, summer storms and leafy suburbs can provide all three.

Bushland, mature trees, old stumps, timber retaining walls and garden beds may support termite activity close to residential properties.

A colony does not need to be directly underneath a house. Termites can travel through the soil and enter through small gaps, construction joints, plumbing penetrations or areas where termite protection has been disturbed.

Older and Newer Homes Can Be at Risk

Older homes may have limited termite protection or chemical treatments that are now beyond their expected service life. However, newer homes are not termite-proof either.

Modern properties commonly include physical barriers, chemical systems, treated materials or exposed slab edges. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of concealed termite entry and make activity easier to identify.

How Often Should Your Home Be Inspected?

Queensland homeowners are generally advised to arrange a professional termite inspection every year, or more often for higher-risk properties.

Homes near bushland or waterways, properties with previous termite activity, and homes with moisture or drainage issues may require more frequent checks. Inspection timing can also depend on the termite-management system installed.
